This panel shows the active user's name and picture.
If you want to change the appearance of this panel's text (text color, size, font, shadow, etc.), modify the UserTitle.dsskin file in the panel's directory (usually %appdata%\Desktop Sidebar\plugins\UserTitle).
Version 2.1, Released March 6th, 2005, Changes:- Fixed bug where whenever the user image wasn't displayed, Panel Properties was opened and OK was clicked an error message popped up.
Version 2.0, Released March 4th, 2005. Changes:- Option to not display a user image.
- Option to specify custom user name and image.
- Panel (hopefully) handles errors better.
- The text now inherits from the main skin to better integrate with the global look of the skin.
Requirements
- Desktop Sidebar version 1.05 build 88 (might work with earlier versions too).
- Microsoft .NET Framework Redistributable 1.1.
Download
- From
the Extension Exchange page.
Please post feedback in this thread! Thanks.

really nice. Only the succesful installed message during installation.

I have for this panel a further suggestion.
I know we have the SystemShutdown Panel, but what do you think about this.
One click on the username or the users picture will lock the worksation or change the user like WIN+L.
And if a user don't want this option he can disable it in the panel properties.

Hi GoMa,
Can you please tell me how did you sign the panel?
GoMa
Jul 8 2004, 08:13 AM
I haven't tried it with the command line copmiler because I don't use it, but I think you have to:
1. Open the command prompt (Start->Run: cmd).
2. Type this: [.NET Framework SDK folder]\Bin\sn -k c:\mykey.snk
3. In the beginning of your panel's code add this:
CODE
[assembly:AssemblyKeyFile("c:\\mykey.snk")]
4. Compile, and it should be signed.
Where is exactly [.NET Framework SDK folder]?
I tried this:C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322 But I can't find the bin directory there.

What is signing?
You don't need it.It's for .NET panels. It makes it so the installation will go smoother...

Well, you do need to INSTALL the SDK in order to have the folder.
SDK Framework 1.1
(I cannot run .NET panel without it installed and I develop .NET panels)-So I have the SDK

.
I also found out how to do it

so nevermind.I just have some problems now.Hopw I'll fix it.
Everything is fine,I think.Thanks GoMa

I'm sorry for using your thread for this

Well it does not show anything, gives me a load error, somthing about not being able to pass the parimenter. Mostlikely contributed to the way that Active Directory is setup...

I'm sorry, but I don't have any Domain setup, so I can't test it. I'll try to search microsoft's site for that though.

That's what skinning is for! Open with notepad: [Application Data]\Desktop Sidebar\plugins\UserTitle\UserTitle.dsskin
You should be able to edit the font size and color there. Just make sure you restart DS after that.

That would mean making a new plugin that combines them both. I will do it if others request it too.
It will be nice if you combine the start menu and user title panels. But you don't have to do it now-wait for the system tray and task tray panels to be released and then do it.I still use the original taskbar so I don't neeed the start panel. But combining them eventually is a good idea.

Already possible, antu^jamban:
Open with notepad:

You should be able to edit the font size and color there. Just make sure you restart DS after that.

Danger, I have windows 2003 Server, all plugins function good and well, but then I installed this plugin without thinking that in w2k3 there is not user icons...
It scrapped my Dsidebar

Now I have repair it, but if you have win2000 or win2k3 don't use this plugin, it is a winXP only...
Then, don't ask for compatibility, DS is supossed to be winXP only

maybe this panel is supposed to be WinXP only, but not whole DS
DS works under w2k for sure and all standard panels work under this system as well
DS team is not responsible for
3rd Party panels by the way GoMa said in first mail his panel works under WinXP, maybe GoMa U could check whether current system is XP or newer to avoid such problems in the future?

I am sorry, it should display only the user name (without the image). I was checking if the operating system is less than WinXp instead of not XP. I think I've repaired this problem now. I will upload a new version soon.

Doesn't it read the user name right now, just like in the start menu? Works for me. :users:

It also didn't show the right user name for me once but I reinstalled Windows so now it works. Maybe he should change and restore he's user name.

I changed my user name from a longer one to a smaller one but DS UserTitle still shows the long one,
so I guess no steady update on the information there...
What did I do wrong? How can I change the name to the shorter one?

Lucifer66
Oct 20 2004, 07:39 AM
I have Windows XP home.
And it seems to be reading from my computer name rather than my user account.
Like when you open a folder the path name is like...
C:\Documents and Settings\Lucifer66\Local Settings\
Well I think it is reading from there because my user account name is different.
I basically made a user account name with unicode for my start menu and I was trying to get the same name on my sidebar,
Is that possible?
btw thanks for your patience!
GoMa
Oct 20 2004, 07:50 AM

Just an idea.

Yes, I'll support that... Let us enter a name of our own, some people might have entered their full name,
but only want their christian name on the bar... I now confess though.... I did, too...

I think that's the best solution

- in case the panel doesn't show the right name or if the user wants it to show something else (maybe even no text at all), the panel will allow him/her to do it.

GoMa, if you have free time, I would like to see this panel have option to turn on/off user picture, set text alignment (left/center/right), text formatting, text color chooser (the color is taken from text color settings of skin in use <--- having it integrate seemlessly with skin)
I know I can edit the dsskin file but ..em... its kinda hard. So what do you say?
yyy
Jan 10 2005, 03:24 AM
Text formating is a problem. The panel uses a skin file (dsskin) and that means that it will use its data. Otherwise, it is hard to change the text format. That's the way DS is built. However, it can be done by letting the panel to modify its own dsskin file, but then I'm not sure if it will get updated without restarting DS. That's the weakness of using skin files

I think that there should be an option to do it in an easier way.
antu^jamban
Jan 10 2005, 03:31 AM
Now that's what I call a problem
yyy
Jan 10 2005, 03:44 AM
Maybe it will be changed in the next builds. He can do it without the ITextOutput using GDI - I just did a panel which draws a text using GDI - it looks really nice and customizable.
antu^jamban
Jan 10 2005, 03:50 AM
and that makes you a great panel builder
yyy
Jan 10 2005, 03:55 AM
GoMa is also a great panel builder - I believe he'll be able to do it too. It isn't that hard

Actually, now I see that there's a "Insert" option to the skin manager which mean that you can add different forammtings while the panel is loaded, I think. Maybe GoMa can use that.
GoMa
Jan 10 2005, 06:34 AM
Hmm, I guess this is a global problem.
QUOTE

I think you can use the "inherit" atrribute in the DSSKIN and set it to "panel" to make the panel inherit the skin's text color.
